While reading Dr. Price's Chaco Trilogy, I noticed that his style and grammar can be pretty difficult to grasp. Some (if not most!) of us aren't entirely comfortable with poetry, so I think it'd be helpful for anyone with questions or problems regarding Monday's readings to post them here and get support from the rest of the class.
What are you having trouble with?
I don't think that my problem came from reading poetry, especially when I heard Dr. Price out loud. Oftentimes, the struggle I have from poetry comes from trying to write it. Little phrases without a subject and verb are hard when I'm so used to prose (even my poem for place last week had that problem). Because you can fudge rules of grammar a little bit, I don't always know how to say what I mean.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't true of all poetry, of course; a lot of it comes in the form of full sentences just spaced out on the page (and sometimes not even that). But I usually like the kind that can say something meaningful without all the prescriptivist rules of grammar (says the linguist).
